The urinary system
bladder
(blad'ur)hollow muscular organ which serves as the reservoir for urine.
distention
(dis-ten�shun) being stretched or enlarged by gas or liquid.
excretory
(eks-kree'tor-ee) pertaining to discharge of waste products from the body.
kidneys
(kid'neez)pair of large, bean-shaped glands, located in the upper abdomen close to the spine, which filter the blood.
meatus
(me-ay�tus) external opening of the urethra.
micturition
(mik-tyoo-rish�un) act of urinating.
nitrogenous wastes
(ny-troj�en-us) by-products of metabolism containing nitrogen.
openings of ureters
narrow slit into the base of the bladder where the ureters open.
penis
(pee�nis) male organ of sexual intercourse through which the urethra passes.
prostate
(pros�tate) a gland in the male which surrounds the bladder neck and urethra; prostatic fluid is secreted by the prostate.
toxin
(tok�sin) poisonous compound produced by a living organism.
upper vaginal wall
(va-jy�nul) anterior surface of the vagina in the female.
ureter
(yoo-ree�ter; yoo�ree-ter) one of two small diameter tubes extending from the kidney to the bladder; conveys urine.
urethra
(yoo-ree�thrah) passageway for urine from the bladder to the exterior of the body.
urinary system
(yoo�rin-er-ee) organs concerned with the production of urine.
urinate
(yoo�rin-ate) to empty the urinary bladder; pass urine.
