Overview of the digestive system

In the mouth, food is broken down in to fragments by chewing and is mixed with lubricating saliva, produced by the salivary glands. It is then swallowed and passes rapidly down the oesophagus into the stomach.

The stomach acts as a temporary reservoir for food. Here, food is sterilised and partly digested to a semi-liquid consistency
