An overview of the digestive system
You can think of the digestive system as having three parts:
- one principle organ, which is the alimentary canal,
- other associated organs, and
- various digestive processes.
The alimentary canal is a long, continuous tube extending from the mouth to the anus.
It has several different names; it is sometimes referred to as the alimentary tract, the gastrointestinal tract, or simply the gut.
Different parts of the tube have different functions, as we will see on the next screens.
