Module 2 - The musculoskeletal system

The condyloid joint

In a condyloid joint, the oval projection of one bone fits into an oval depresion in the other bone.

This allows flexion (bending), extension (straightening), abduction (movement away from the midline), adduction (movement towards the midline) and circumduction (a circular movement).

The joint between the wrist and the bones of the forearm is a condyloid joint.

PLAY the video to see how these joints move.

Note that this joint does not allow rotation (movement around an axis).
