The appendicular skeleton - the upper limbs
The upper limb consists of the shoulder, arm, wrist and hand.
The shoulder
The bones of the shoulder region are the clavicle (also known as the 'collar bone') and the scapula (also known as the 'shoulder blade').
The only bony connection between the shoulder and the rest of the skeleton is the joint between the clavicle and the sternum. Apart from this, the shoulder is held in place by muscles and tendons.
This gives the shoulder great mobility.
