The appendicular skeleton - the lower limbs
The leg
The bone that is connected to the pelvic bone at the hip joint is the first of the leg bones, the femur.
The femur is the longest and strongest bone in the body. Its rounded, almost ball-shaped upper end is called the head of the femur and this fits into (or 'articulates with') the acetabulum. The thinner neck connects the head to the body or shaft of the femur.
There are two noticeable protuberances where the neck meets the shaft. The larger is the greater trochanter (pronounced trock-anter); the smaller one is (not surprisingly) the lesser trochanter.
