Module 9 – The Endocrine System

6. The gonads

'Gonads' is the collective word used to describe the male or female reproductive organs.

The male gonads are called testes (singular testis), and they are located in the scrotum.

Testes produce several sex hormones, the most important of which is testosterone. Testosterone:

  • promotes the development of male sex organs
  • stimulates the development of male characteristics, including the growth of body hair, the deepening of the voice, and features such as greater muscle mass and a wider jaw.
