The islets of Langerhans are cell groups (called islet cells) distributed throughout the pancreas. They secrete several hormones, the most important of which is insulin. Insulin is important in regulating the sugar (glucose) level in the blood. The body must have insulin in order to break down sugary and starchy foods effectively.
