4. Adrenal glands

There are two glands called the adrenals situated at the top of the kidneys. These glands secrete hormones that help to:

  • regulate carbohydrate metabolism
  • regulate electrolyte metabolism
  • manage our reactions to stress

Adrenal steroids are essential to our survival. For example, hydrocortisone regulates carbohydrate metabolism.

Other hormones, though not vital, are very important. For example, adrenaline helps the body to respond to danger, stress and competitive activities.
