Direct functions of the pituitary gland

The pituitary gland can directly affect the body by:

  • regulating growth, development and sexual maturation in the young by secreting growth hormone
  • regulating water excretion and retention by secreting vasopressin
  • regulating lactation in women after they give birth, by secreting prolactin and oxytocin.
