Module 5 - The nervous system
The cerebrum

The cerebrum is the largest region of the brain. Its main functions are:

  • mental activity – for example, memory, intelligence, reasoning, learning
  • sensory perception – of pain, temperature, touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell
  • initiation and control of voluntary muscle movements.

The cerebrum consists of two cerebral hemispheres. The outer layer of each hemisphere – the cerebral cortex – consists of grey matter.
