The cerebrum
The cerebral cortex is separated into four lobes:
- the frontal lobe – containing the areas of the brain that direct actions, as well as areas important in speech
- the occipital lobe – containing the area responsible for interpreting impulses from the retina of the eye
- the parietal lobe – containing sensory areas governing touch, pain and temperature
- the temporal lobe – containing the auditory area that receives and interprets impulses from the ear.
