The brainstem

The second part of the brainstem is:

• The pons (sometimes referred to as the pons varolii).
• This lies immediately below the midbrain.
• It is an important link between the cerebellum and the rest of the nervous system. It also contains nerve cells involved in some involuntary actions, including the control of respiration.
