The axial skeleton - the vertebral column
The skull is supported by the vertebral column, which is sometimes called the 'spinal column' or just 'the spine'.
This column consists of a chain of 33 bones, called the vertebrae (singular: vertebra). In adults, some of the vertebrae are fused together so that there are only 26 separate bones.
