The pancreas

Chyme entering the duodenum from the stomach is mixed with:

  • secretions from the duodenal wall,
  • bile (made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder) and
  • pancreatic juice.

These all aid digestion.

Pancreatic juice is secreted by cells in the pancreas. It contains a number of powerful enzymes that all convert food into simple substances.

The secretions drain into branches of the pancreatic duct which converges with the bile duct before emptying into the duodenum.
