Module 7 – The digestive system

3. The lower digestive system

Finally, we'll look at the lower digestive system. This term describes the associated organs from the large intestine to the anus.

The large intestine (also called the colon) is about 1.5 metres long. It is shorter than the small intestine, but is larger in diameter. Its function is to absorb water and salts from food residues and intestinal secretions, leading to the formation of faeces.
