Word building
Medical terms are built by combining a root word with a prefix and/or a suffix to create the appropriate meaning.
In the following examples on the right, the root word nephr, meaning kidney or kidneys, is used to construct several different terms.
In the last example, two consonants fall together, so a combining vowel is introduced to make pronunciation easier.
