At various points along the length of the lymphatic vessels are masses of tissue called lymph nodes. These are composed of specialised tissue known as lymphoid tissue.

Incoming lymph enters the nodes through afferent vessels and is filtered through the lymphoid tissue. This removes impurities and harmful organisms.

The filtered lymph leaves via efferent vessels.
