The abdominal aorta
The main branches of the abdominal aorta are:
- the coeliac artery, the superior mesenteric artery and the inferior mesenteric artery, which supply the gut
- the renal arteries to the kidneys.
The abdominal aorta also divides into two common iliac arteries. Each of these branches into:
- an internal iliac artery that supplies the pelvic organs
- an external iliac artery that becomes the femoral artery to the legs (running alongside the femur).
