The series of events that take place during a single heart beat is called the cardiac cycle.

At the beginning of the cardiac cycle, the myocardium is fully relaxed. Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium from the two vena cavae while oxygenated blood enters the left atrium via the pulmonary veins.
