Blood flow through the heart
The heart normally beats about 60-80 times a minute.
During a heart beat the myocardium contracts and then relaxes, forcing blood into and out of the chambers of the heart.
The contractions are triggered by regular bursts of electrical activity at the sino-atrial node - the natural pacemaker of the heart. The node is a tiny area of specialised cardiac muscle found in the upper wall of the right atrium.
