There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves originating from the brain. Some of these are sensory nerves, some are motor nerves and some contain a mix of both motor and sensory nerve fibres. Each pair of nerves is identified by a Roman numeral corresponding to the location of its connection with the brain, beginning at the front of the brain.
