The eyeball and the inside of the eyelids are covered with a fine transparent membrane, the conjunctiva.

The space between the eyelids and the eyeball is the conjunctival sac. (You'll see these better when we look at a cross-section in a moment.)

The eyelashes, short curved hairs on the free edges of the eyelids, also help to protect the eye.
